Are you a small business owner in Yakima looking to get started with Microsoft 365 without spending hours on setup? Whether you’re setting up Business Basic for emails and cloud storage or Business Standard for desktop apps, this guide walks you through the process step-by-step. No IT degree required.

⏱️ What You’ll Need (Before You Start)

  • A domain name (e.g., yourbusiness.com)
  • A Microsoft 365 Business Basic or Standard subscription
  • About 60 minutes of your time
  • Admin access to your domain registrar (like GoDaddy, Namecheap, etc.)

🔑 Step 1: Sign Up for Microsoft 365

  1. Go to Microsoft 365 Business plans.
  2. Choose Business Basic (cloud only) or Business Standard (includes desktop apps).
  3. Click Buy now and follow the prompts.
  4. You’ll create a temporary domain like yourbiz.onmicrosoft.com — don’t worry, you’ll connect your real domain next.

🌐 Step 2: Connect Your Custom Domain

  1. In the Microsoft 365 admin center, go to Settings > Domains.
  2. Click Add Domain and enter your domain name.
  3. Microsoft will ask you to verify ownership — usually by adding a TXT record at your domain registrar.
  4. Once verified, Microsoft will guide you to update your DNS records (MX, CNAME, TXT) to enable email and Teams.

💡 Tip: Use GoDaddy or other supported registrars for one-click DNS integration if available.

📧 Step 3: Set Up Email Accounts

  1. Go to Users > Active users.
  2. Click Add a user for each team member.
  3. Assign licenses (Basic or Standard) and enter their details.
  4. Email is now live at [email protected]!

🧰 Step 4: Install Apps (Business Standard Only)

If you’re on Business Standard, you can install desktop versions of Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.

  1. Sign in at https://login.microsoftonline.com.
  2. Click Install Office in the top-right corner.
  3. Follow the installer prompts.

📂 Step 5: Set Up OneDrive and Teams

  • OneDrive: Each user gets 1TB of cloud storage. Great for securely syncing files across devices.
  • Teams: Use it for internal chat, video calls, and collaboration. Create a team, invite users, and start organizing channels.

🔒 Bonus: Secure Your Accounts

  • Enable MFA (Multi-Factor Authentication) via Users > Active users > Multi-factor auth. For more on MFA best practices, read our guide on Cybersecurity Solutions for Small Businesses.
  • Set up basic security policies under Microsoft Defender for Business (included with both plans). Learn more about advanced protection in our article on Microsoft Sentinel.
  • Turn on email anti-phishing policies in the Security & Compliance Center. For comprehensive phishing prevention strategies, check out our guide on Phishing Attacks Prevention.
